The apple, symbol of ripeness and plenty, the rosy richness of life, health and vitality. The apple, also symbol of temptation, sin, and the ultimate fall from grace. But which is it? It can't be something good and bad. The law of identity says nothing can ever be itself and its opposite at the same time. It's impossible. The same is true of female beauty. Some people tell us it's evil and others that it's good. But which is it? At Body in Mind, we believe that Nikkala Stott in her prime is a ripe apple, delicious to the eyes, meant to be enjoyed like the sweetest fruit, and savoured as dearly as life itself. Whatever morality you attach to them, in the end, an apple is only an apple, and Nikkala is just Nikkala. If we find a perfect apple fallen from a tree, we eat it, it tastes good, it's nourishing, and we feel lucky for finding it. We got an email from a guy this week who condemned Body in Mind for not featuring younger girls on our site, "ages 10-17", he said. After all, if Body in Mind is about female beauty first and foremost, he went on, then we should have the integrity to feature the beauty of young girls as well, shouldn't we? I told him that the beauty of women is so awesome a force in the universe that when compared to it, the beauty of girls approaches almost complete insignificance. If girls are beautiful at all it's only because they resemble women in some way. For Body in Mind to feature girls would be like a car racing website featuring roller skates. Beauty is the representation of values. To men, beautiful women represent a myriad of adult human values: sex, purpose, confidence, maturity, intelligence, success, wealth, etc. However, to men who refuse to grow up and don't want to pursue values, young girls are beautiful because they represent a world where growing up and pursuing values is not yet necessary. That's hardly something worth devoting a website to.

I must be the only man who hates high heels. I do. I think they're ridiculous. People will agree that attaching sticks, barbs, and all variety of torturous objects to runway models' bodies at an Alexander McQueen show is absurd. But say one bad thing about 7 inch spikes coming out of a lady's shoes and find yourself instantly alone. Everyone but me seems to love them. Some nonsense about making a woman's calves look nicer or something. Call me kooky but I think a woman's calf looks quite nice all by itself. Check out Ingrid's in this photoset and see if you agree. Yet how many other websites would have stuck some stupid high heels on her? I saw an attractive woman walking down the street today wearing Capri pants and simple flats on her feet. I looked for her over my shoulder long past rounding a corner and watching her pass out of sight. She was walking quickly, somewhere to go, something to do. I like that. I like a woman with a purpose, with a vision of her own. And that's why I don't like high heels. They stress appearance over substance, and I like a woman with substance. There is a huge difference between nude models who do it to pay for school, to attract - or gain their freedom from - a boyfriend, or to temporarily make a living, and those who do it as their profession. Girls who do it just for money never seem to do it very long, or very well. They might be stunningly gorgeous, but after a few short seasons of posing they disappear, usually to our dismay. It never clicks in their brains that posing nude might actually be a good thing, better than any one thing it might buy. But career models do click with it. At some point they realize that their beauty is the best thing that will ever happen to them and they go with it. Of course some girls have more brains than beauty and it's right they should do something else. But we are glad that in America and the UK at least, there are still beautiful women who pose nude for a living and believe it's a good thing. They will always have a special place on Body in Mind.

Yet many people - Americans especially - have a hard time separating the two, or for that matter, enjoying the two together. For example beauty contests do their very best to remove any 'sexual' overtones, justifying the swimsuit segment as a 'poise and fitness' test. Meanwhile, porn sites compete with each other over who how depraved they can be. (You never hear about porn sites claiming to be the nicest and most beautiful.) But beauty and sex are always better when mixed with each other. Porn is always better when the actors are beautiful, and beauty is always more appealing when there's a little romance hinted at. Therefore Body in Mind doesn't remove every single sexual overtone in our photos, or romantic overtone, or any element of beauty. What does it really mean to be properly dressed? Usually people use that term to mean that our jiggly bits are not visible, that we have covered them in clothing. But what if we could do this without clothes? Or more still, what if we could keep our jiggly bits from sexually arousing or disgusting those who can see us? We've often seen elegant women dressed to the nines on red carpets half naked, some even revealing their breasts or pubic triangle. And no one freaks out. In fact over the years many top fashion designers have designed clothes that are meant to reveal. So then, maybe a better definition of clothing and being dressed in general is that they are meant to show other people how we wish to be regarded. If we want to be seen as classy, we dress a certain way, if we want to be sexy, another. Expert dressers can pull off both at once. Sitting on the fence is the safe thing to do. That's the general concensus. If you don't stick your neck out you won't get in trouble, and both sides of an issue will leave you alone. But is it really safe to leave battles over things that matter to you to other people? What if your side loses? Is it really safe to risk losing something important? And what is it you're then safe from? Winning? One battle where almost everyone sits on the fence is the issue of nudity, specifically, female nudity. Clothes themselves are a type of fence, a barrier, a truce in the ancient and ongoing struggle between full freedom and full submission to others. Fashions and degrees of acceptable nudity vary from person to person, culture to culture, and from era to era. Certain celebrities can be naked in the media, while women in some religious cultures can be executed for showing an ankle. Body in Mind believes female beauty like Tanzi's is there to sway us all off the fence, to inspire us all to take sides and to fight for what we believe in and care about. Satan was one of the orginal angels, an archangel in fact, like Michael and Gabriel. It's only after millenia that artists began to invent the female version. Such a creature is never mentioned in the Bible or the Koran. The wings are an awkward attempt to represent virtue, which is pretty hard to depict in a photo, but we think a woman like Linda shows it quite well, not only in her pride in herself, but in her happiness, her confidence, and her courage. As beautiful as a field of lush crimson poppies looks, it might seem like an odd place in which to photograph a beautiful woman. One of the amazing things about beauty - true beauty - is that you can put it in the ugliest places and it still shines - like a diamond in a coal mine. In fact, real beauty can make everything nicer. For example, Carmen in this old warehouse makes it look pretty good. The dusty greens and drab grays look really good against her pink skin and strawberry blonde hair. This is why we see so many beautiful women in advertising. They make things look good. There wouldn't be any advertising - no billboards, no magazines, no tv commercials - if there were no beautiful women to make it work in the first place. To suggest - as many people do these days - that uglier women should be used is a logical contradiction. Beauty causes advertising, not the other way around. You can try to replace beauty with ugliness, but just as stealing wealth won't make you a good businessman, or hitting someone with a club won't make you right, removing beauty won't make ugliness nicer. Only adding it will.

The most common question we are asked at Body in Mind is when is Nikkala Stott going to get completely naked. The answer is, when she's good and ready. The tone of the people who ask this question if often very rude, very accusing and very impatient, as if Nikkala is teasing them too much, or as if Body in Mind is not giving them what they've paid for. We've actually refunded memberships to a few guys who were downright hostile about it, as if they deserved to see Nikkala naked just because they managed to come up with 10 bucks for a membership. What everyone needs to remember is that Nikkala is one of the most beautiful women to ever exist, and that we are all incredibly lucky to lay eyes on her even fully clothed, let alone half naked. And if we ever get to see absolutely everything God gave her, it will be as if we've died and gone to heaven. But just like on earth, there's a LOT to enjoy before that happens.

Did you know that star BiM models Nadya and Britney are actually Ukranian sisters? It's very difficult for photographers to find beautiful women to pose nude anywhere else in the world. In the late 80s and early 90s even the world's most famous models and actresses had no problem appearing fully nude. Cindy Crawford, Madonna, Sharon Stone, all made more money than any woman ever before simply by using their beauty, in fashion, music, and movies. But since then, the success of beautiful women has been misrepresented as the opposite, as degradation and exploitation. But women like Cindy, Madonna, Sharon, Nadya and Britney are anything but victims. They are powerful women using their beauty to get what they want. And unless we want also to lose all our eastern European nude models to the modern tide of political "correctness", it's time we learned that selling beauty is a good thing.

One of the startling predictions made by D.Bell's theory of female beauty is the existence of people who lack the capacity to perceive any beauty at all. The beauty blind. But the fact is, female beauty represents one's values - whatever we find beautiful we do so because we want it in real life. So a man might adore Maya's photos because he wants in real life what she seems to possess, be it beauty, confidence, power, or lifestyle. His moral failure to pursue these things in real life and in a real woman is his fault. Female beauty tells him to act; society tells him not to trust it, so he limits himself to impotent fantasies. Beauty is not the same thing as decoration. Decoration is something you put on things that by themselves are not beautiful. For example a cake, or a dance hall. A beautiful woman, therefore, should never be decorated - no jewellery, no nail paint, no tattoos. We always liked those old etchings depicting the legendary Queen of Sheba, fully nude and adorned with only a few feathers and precious jewels, holding public court and receiving foreign dignitaries and sundry homage makers. The way she held her head high with pride, not only in her kingdom but in herself. Not a trace of shame in her own nudity, nor in her power to seduce her world. Can a nude photo of a buxom and curvy woman be art? Of course. One of the classical elements of design is color harmony. For example, in this series of Peach we see a lovely harmony between her yellow hair, the gold cushions, and the magenta silk sheets. This is a perfect choice of colors for nude photography because yellow and magenta are also the colours that blend into the color of a nude woman's skin. Together they are lively happy colors, which also perfectly suit Peach's personality. So again we have an element of art - a theme - each element of the photo matching and supporting the others. One of the great things about beauty is that you can find it in the most unexpected places. For example, who knew that the Hubble space telescope would look farther into the heavens than anyone even had and see such lovely arrangements of gaseous nebulae? Or at the other end of the scale, that sub-atomic particles violently disintegrating into quarks would do so with the grace and elegance of figure skaters? It's the same with female beauty. The fashion world is full of great beauties who were discovered in small towns all around the world, many from countries that haven't even heard of women's fashion. And then there's the Ukraine. If you've ever worked as a photographer you know that beauty is what happens while you're unpacking your camera or just setting up, or whenever you're not quite ready to shoot. For example, this set was only a 'warm-up' while Chris got used to his brand new camera and Klaudia went on a romp through the garden right after a rain. And even though the shots are admittedly grainy and blurry and not at all technically perfect, they made us feel all summery inside - a welcome feeling after all the winter storms these last few weeks. And inspite of the flaws, we saw great beauty in this set, more than any other we have waiting for you. So we went with it. Nobody's perfect, (with the possible exception of Zuzana, of course). We wanted a special photoshoot for New Year's and we could think of no one better to pose for it. And Chris Ruegge did his usual top-notch job on it too. But we didn't give ourselves enough leadway to get this series up in time! So we apologize for not being perfect. Which brings us to our resolution for the coming year, which is, to make Body in Mind even better than we've been already. What we can't promise though, is that we'll find any one more beautiful than Zuzana.

Sculpture is the best way to represent the best in human beings without the distractions and potential contradictions of a specific setting. Oddly, in sculpture, the purely physical becomes the best way to show the spiritual. Imagine if you will then, that Athena has just sprung to life from the sands of time, a human sculpture in clay, still wet with the joy of discovering herself and the world around her. We think it would look a lot like this photo series by Dmitry Kurapov.

The debate over the difference between art and porn has gone on for decades, centuries even, which kind of mystifies us because the answer is simplicity itself. Porn is a kind of art created to depict sexual subjects and themes, whereas art is created to depict a perfect world. Whatever the artist's or the pornographer's particular view of the world or sex is irrelevant. Porn can be anything from a woman taking sexual pleasure in displaying herself to depictions of actual copulation. And art can be anything from a child's drawing to Michelangelo's David. Nudity is NEVER a determining factor in classifying a work as porn or art. Only sex is. If sex is depicted, then it's porn. If not, then it's art. A simple rule of thumb is: is the depicted person thinking about sex? If they are then it's porn; if not, it's art.

The casting couch

The casting couch has a very bad reputation. It implies that a model or actress has to have sex with her potential employer in order to get a job in a movie or production. We see it a different way. We see it as a chance for a beautiful woman to show how beautiful she can be. It's an audition, a beauty audition. If a model can pose beautifully on a couch, she can pose beautifully anywhere. Tracy is obviously a pro. We can't imagine anyone looking better on a simple sofa. And we can't imagine her needing to do anything more to get the job. We will hire her anytime!
